Despite their name, air fresheners aren’t effective at actually freshening air in your Orange, Texas, home. These chemical-filled products are ineffective against serious odors, and can even be dangerous when they come in contact with your skin and lungs. Ditch the dangerous air fresheners and replace them with healthy alternatives that keep your home safe and clean.
Identify Hazardous Air Fresheners
Commercial air fresheners are typically comprised of chemicals like formaldehyde, p-dichlorobenzene, and petroleum distillates. These can cause uncomfortable symptoms like watery eyes, asthma attacks, irritated skin, and respiratory problems. Rather than cleaning the air, air fresheners simply mask odors with strongly scented chemicals. These chemicals can cause further issues including headaches and irritated nasal passages.
Keep the Air Clean
If you’re dealing with an unpleasant odor in your home, the best strategy is to remove it rather than replace it. Instead of covering the smell with a stronger scent, find the source of the odor and eliminate it. An air cleaner is an effective solution for airborne bacteria, mold, mildew, and other pollutants in the air. Adding a UV lamp to your HVAC system will have the same effect.
If your air is simply stale, consider a ventilator. This will improve air flow while protecting your energy efficiency. For a damp, musty home, a whole home dehumidifier is an effective choice.
Use a Natural Replacement
If you want to add a pleasant aroma to your home, consider natural methods that are free from chemicals and irritants. Essential oils are effective with just a few drops in an oil warmer or diffuser. Natural ingredients like cinnamon sticks, citrus peels, and cloves smell wonderful when simmered on the stove or in a small crockpot. Even your regular activities like baking muffins or hanging fresh herbs up to dry add a lovely smell naturally.
